RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: The city was hit by three major fire incidents, as a tire godown, a medicine store, and a cloth factory were gutted, here on Friday.

The back to back fire incidents in the city on Friday, and government’s inability to control the situation on time, again raised questions over the performance of disaster management authorities including the fire department.

A major fire engulfed a tire godown in Gulbai area of the city, damaging a huge quantity of products. As many as 18 fire tenders took part to extinguish the blaze. Thick black fumes spread across the godown creating fear among the factory owners and area people.

The employees of the tire factory with the help of area people however managed to remove some tires before the blazes engulfed the entire godown.

The fire fighters failed to completely overcome the third degree blaze mainly due to limited resources such as water in their bowsers. According to the officials, gas pipeline leakages were the reason behind the fire. Fire blazes could not be controlled completely till filing of this report and rescue efforts were underway. The loss of property was yet to be determined.

In another incident, a medicine godown at the Hawksbay, and a cloth factory at SITE area also caught fire. Sources said that fire brigade teams could not reach at the sites on time as the massive fire damaged cloths and medicines.
