ISLAMABAD: Senate Special Committee on Marginalized Segments of Society believes that there is a dire need to formulate a policy at government level for eradication of poverty to overcome marginalized segmentation of the society.

Senate Special Committee, on the direction of Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani, was chaired by Senator Nisar Muhammad to discuss the work plan/course of action of the special committee. The committee also discussed the economical, social, legal and constitutional rights of the deprived segments of society. The committee reviewed the performance of government institutions and discussed the methods for improvement of performance of these institutions.

While endorsing the significance of Constitution, Chairman Committee Senator Nisar said the importance of the rights given to the deprived minorities can be observed from first forty articles along with the introduction of the Constitution. He said the society has suppressed the issue and this was never highlighted at major platforms.

Chairman Committee suggested requesting Senate Chairman to attend the committee for better output. The Committee Members endorsed and appreciated the idea.

To sort out the issues and matters with respect to the rights of deprived segments of the society, the committee decided to formulate a policy on permanent basis for facilitating those segments legally. Senator Muhammad Ali Saif remarked that the Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) should also be taken on board for the same purpose.

In response, Chairman Committee directed to evaluate the performance of Bait-ul-Maal and Benazir Income Support to further enhance the performance.

He also sought complete data of orphans, disabled, homeless and displaced citizens from the Statistic Division.
