ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production has recommended that requisite (lump sum) funds for financial years 2016-17 and 2017-18 for Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) for installation of ship lift and transfer system as well as associated machinery and equipment to provide docking and repairing facilities may be released on priority basis in the better interest of the country.

The committee was chaired by MNA Khawaja Sohail Mansoor. The committee was briefed by the managing director, Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW), regarding its public sector development project for installation of ship lift and transfer system and associated machinery and equipment to provide docking and repair facilities.

The committee appreciated the role of the Minister for Defence Production, Chief of Navel Staff and Managing Director KS&EW for making the institution a profitable industry.

The committee recommended that its next meeting would discuss the establishing of new shipyards at Port Qasim Karachi and Gwadar Port.

The committee decided that secretaries for Ministry of Finance & Revenue, Ministry of Planning & Development and Ministry of Ports & Shipping and chairmen/secretaries Gwadar Development Authority and Port Qasim would also be invited in the said meeting.

The meeting was attended by MNAs Muhammad Khan Daha, Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, Chudhary Hamid Hameed, Bhawan Das, Amra Khan, Iffat Liaqat and Asyia Nasir, and senior officers of the Ministry of Defence Production, Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) and Ministry of Planning & Development.
