RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Adiala Jail from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) amid tight security arrangements on Tuesday after doctors declared that his health was improving.

An official source said that the decision to shift the former premier to Adiala Jail was taken in the light of his medical reports. He said that Sharif had also shown his willingness in this regard. A team of doctors will regularly monitor Sharif’s health at the jail, he said.

Earlier, President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday evening visited Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to inquire after the health of former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Presidential Suite of the PIMS Cardiac Center from Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on Sunday night on the doctors’ recommendation after he complained of chest pain and irregularities were reported in electrocardiogram. Dr Naeem Malik, head of the PIMS cardiology department, had suggested the jail authorities to shift Sharif to hospital as his blood tests were showing clotting.

A four-member medical board constituted by PIMS conducted various pathological tests of Sharif in Adiala Jail after his health condition worsened.

The panel of doctors led by Joint Executive Director PIMS Dr Ijaz Qadeer comprised Dr Shajee Ahmad Siddiqui, professor of general medicine, Dr Muhammad Naeem Malik, head of cardiology department, Dr Sohail Tanveer, head of nephrology department, and Dr Mashook Ali, head of gastroenterology department.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were arrested on July 13 at Allama Iqbal International Airport after Accountability Court sentenced them for 10 years and seven years in prison respectively in the Avenfield case.
