KARACHI: The rupee breached an important level of 109 versus the dollar on the money market on Friday, dealers said.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee dropped further 15 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 108.80 and Rs 109.00 respectively. It also lost one rupee versus the euro for buying at Rs 145.50 but remained unchanged for selling at Rs 145.75, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: The rupee inched down by five-paisa in relation to dollar for buying at Rs 107.65, and lost four-paisa for selling at Rs 107.68, they said.

In the final Asian trade, the yen fell to a four-month low versus the dollar, with the low-yielding Japanese currency pressured by signs of improving risk appetite and contrasting outlooks for monetary policy. Investors also dumped the Australian dollar after the country's central bank chief said he was "open-minded" about intervening to weaken the currency.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 63.05, the greenback was at 3.2140 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US dollar at 6.0925 against the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee maintained downward slide and shed five-paisa against the US dollar on the local currency market on Friday.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading at its day earlier closing of Rs 108.70 and Rs 108.95 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. At close, the dollar was marginally improved to Rs 108.75 and Rs 109.00 on buying and selling sides, respectively.

Similarly, the rupee remained under pressure, as it was depreciated against the pound sterling. The pound’s buying and selling rates were increased from Thursday’s closing of Rs 173.00 and Rs 173.25 to Rs 174.40 and Rs 174.65, respectively, the dealers added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar showed a further increase of 40 paisa against the rupee on the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Friday.

The dollar opened at Rs 108.40 for buying and Rs 108.50 for selling against last rate of Rs 108 for buying and Rs 108.10 for selling. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 108.40 for buying and Rs 108.50 for selling.

Pound Sterling opened at Rs 172 for buying and Rs 172.50 for selling against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
