Ban on export of logs be deferred for three months

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KCCI) President Abdullah Zaki has demanded of the government of Myanmar to defer the recent ban on the exports of logs for at least three months.

In a letter sent to President of Union of Myanmar and the concerned officials of Pakistan’s Embassy in Myanmar, the KCCI chief stated: “A favorable response from the government of Myanmar, in this regard, will enable Pakistani importers to ensure uninterrupted supplies to local markets and also explore other sources around the world for importing similar teak and hardwood logs.”

Pointing out that the concerned importers were pretty upset due to the said ban as it was likely to affect the furniture, boat and plywood industry of Pakistan, the KCCI chief said: “While we fully respect Myanmar government’s decision to impose ban on logs exports but I strongly feel that keeping in view the strong friendly ties between the two countries, they should give some relief to Pakistani importers.”

Referring to the KCCI members’ concern over Myanmar government’s decision of imposing ban on logs exports, he said that they had asked the Chamber to assist them in convincing the Myanmar’s government to defer the ban for at least three months.
