ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira has said the federal government was responsible for the ongoing political turmoil in the country.

Talking to media persons here on Monday, Kaira said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was morally bound to resign after the report of Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which has probed the Model Town killings in Lahore in June.

He said the PPP tried to resolve the political crisis. PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at Lahore to defuse the tension, he said.

He said the situation would have been different if the government had realized the sensitivity of the situation.

“We are not with the government. We were with democracy and will support it till the end,” Kaira declared.

The PPP leader said demand for the registration of an FIR was genuine. The case of the Model Town firing incident should have been filed by the government and the rulers should not have interfered in the investigation of the incident.—NNI
