RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: A two-member investigation team of Scotland Yard on Wednesday met the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by Ministry of Interior for investigations into suspects in the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq’s murder case.

Sources said a JIT headed by FIA director Inam Ghani has recorded the statement of Moazzam Ali, a key suspect in the murder case, and it will also investigate the other two suspects - Mohsin Ali and Khalid Shamim - who were arrested by Frontier Crops at Pak-Afghan border. The JIT which consists of police and intelligence officials has submitted its initial report of investigations to the Ministry of Interior, sources said.

They said that members of JIT also met with a two-member Scotland Yard team and they exchanged important document and information with each other regarding Dr Imran Farooq’s murder case.  The JIT was formed under the Protection of Pakistan Act (POPA) with an exclusive mandate to investigate ‘abetment and assistance’ in Farooq’s murder. Introducing amendments in the POPA, the federal government had recently empowered the FIA to interrogate suspects in custody for 90 days.

“The JIT will meet on a daily basis with a view to finalizing the final report regarding investigation on an immediate basis,” they said. Dr Imran Farooq, 50, a founding member of the MQM, was killed in Edgware, northwest London, in September 2010.
