KARACHI: Model Customs Collectorate (MCC), Preventive has foiled an attempt to smuggle huge quantity of liquor in the country.

Speaking at a press conference held at East Wharf, Karachi, Tariq Huda, collector MCC Preventive along with other officers concerned said that the department had received a tip-off that an importer Asif Bilal, who imported seven different consignments from China in the past, was trying to smuggle huge quantity of liquor through transshipment consignment to Peshawar.

Reacting to this information, the department has mounted strict vigilance and intercepted a consignment, which was stuffed in a 20ft container on July 28 2015. The consignment was mis-declared as beverages.

Instead of assorted beverages as declared, container was stuffed with liquor. The suspected container was examined and the preventive staff recovered 15,486 cans and bottles of 12 different top brands. The estimated value of seized consignment is over Rs 25 million, Huda said. An FIR of the case is being lodged and further investigations are in progress.
