Berlin: A majority of Germans expressed no fear of terrorism despite the latest attacks in neighbouring Belgium, although more than half said they expected

some sort of attack would

take place in the country this year, a poll published Sunday said.

According to the tabloid Bild newspaper’s Sunday edition, 56 per cent of a representative sample of more than 500 people said they personally had no fear of terrorism, as opposed to 42 per cent who expressed the opposite.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere speaking in the same article meanwhile stated that there was no evidence of attacks planned in Germany.

He described the situation in light of the increased terrorism risk as “tense,” but said there was currently no reason to cancel public events or take similar precautions.

De Maiziere however repeated demands for better data sharing between European security agencies. “In times of serious dangers it has to be clear that data protection is not more important than protection of citizens.”—dpa
