BUENOS AIRES: Argentina on Thursday raised its view for the country’s 2015-16 soyabean and corn crops thanks to robust yields but trimmed its outlook for the wheat planting area and warned that wet weather could reduce it further.

The Agriculture Ministry said it now expects 39.8 million tonnes from the 2015-16 corn crop, up from 37.9 million in its last monthly report, and it forecast 58.8 million tonnes of soyabeans, compared with 58 million before.

In 2014-15 Argentina produced 33.8 million tonnes of corn and 61.4 million tonnes of soyabeans.

The ministry reported robust soyabean yields in the provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Cordoba and Santa Fe, and said that corn yields “continued at high levels.”

But it said some wheat growers could cancel their planting plans altogether after delays due to rain in June and the first half of July.

The ministry said it might trim its new 5.25 million hectares forecast for the 2016-17 wheat planting area if conditions do not improve. It had previously put the wheat planting area at 5.34 million hectares.
