KARACHI: Some members of rights groups on Thursday demanded the dismissal of the acting vice chancellor of the Federal Urdu University, Dr Suleman D. Muhammad, after the PhD thesis with which he earned him his doctorate was proved to have been plagiarized.

At a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, they asked President Mamnoon Hussain, who is chancellor of the Federal Urdu University, to step in to resolve the crisis in the country’s only university named for the national language through the vice chancellor’s dismissal.

The Higher Education Commission has declared Suleman D Muhammad’s PhD degree fake, they said. At the same time, the standing committee of the National Assembly and the federal education minister have recommended the removal of the vice chancellor. The Karachi University’s committee on plagiarism has also raised the issue, they said.

The speakers included the director of PILER, Karamat Ali, vice chairperson of the HRCP Asad Iqbal Butt and director of the NOW Communities Farhat Parveen. They said that although Dr Suleman’s plagiarized PhD degree is in Islamiat, he teaches economics as a subject.
