RECORDER REPORT

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice (CJ) Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Tuesday ordered the Director General Child Protection Bureau to produce the record of FIRs registered against employers for employing children in hazardous work environment in 2017.

The Chief Justice expressed his dismay and observed that the summary had been notified but no labour inspector had been appointed so far. He inquired that what steps had been initiated to curb child labour practices and action taken against the MPA found involved in killing of domestic child worker.

The Chief Justice also appointed former president Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir as amicus curiae regarding the report of human rights commission presented to the federal government with respect to the child labour prevalent in Pakistan.

The petitioner’s counsel, Sheraz Zaka, submitted that across the country 22.6 million children are out of schools and most of them are being employed in domestic household work and industrial establishments.

Sheraz contended that in the year 2015 the LHC had ordered the Labour Secretary to consider framing policy on domestic workers regarding their wages and they should also be notified just like workers working in industrial establishments.

The court after hearing the petitioner’s counsel at length called a report from the Director General Child Protection Bureau.
