LAHORE: A seminar on “Assistive Devices & Technologies” for need of persons with disabilities for Independent life is being held by Information Technology University (ITU) Punjab in collaboration with Team DREAMS at Arfa Software Technology Park on Wednesday. Dr Umar Saif, founding Vice-chancellor ITU, chairman PITB and advisor to the CM Punjab will be the chief guest while speakers include Naureel Abbas, President (Team Dreams the Art of Living)and Zaeem Yaqoob Khan, Director student affairs and external relations at Beaconhouse National University.

Primary purpose of assistive devices and technologies is to maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence to facilitate participation and to enhance overall well-being. They can also help prevent impairments and secondary health conditions. Examples of assistive devices and technologies include wheelchairs, prostheses, hearings aids, visual aids & specialized computer software and hardware that increase mobility, hearing and vision or communication capacities. In many low-income and middle-income countries, only 5-15 percent of people who require assistive devices and technologies have access to them. During the event, distributed wheelchairs & white cane are made by people with disabilities. These are not typical hospitalized wheelchairs but are customized made according to disability; height, length & weight of person with disability and White Cane is necessity for a visually impaired person to walk around independently.
