PESHAWAR: At least two police personnel were martyred when unknown assailants on-board a car, opened fire at them in Shergarh area of district Mardan on Monday.

Police said, the cops on duty at Shagonaka check post, signaled a suspicious car to stop but the onboard persons opened fire at the police, martyring two cops.

The martyred cops were identified as Farhad son of Shahbaz and Muhammad Nawaz son of Sher Muhammad.

Police said one of the cops died at the scene while the other breathed his last at the hospital of his wounds.

After the firing incident, the DPO Mardan along with other police officers reached the spot and directed for a search operation to nab the killers.

Talking to media persons, District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed said that information was received to police that some people are smuggling narcotics. He added that acting on the top-off police party established a check point near Mardan-Malakand boundary in the limits of Shergarh police station.

DPO added that during that time two people were passing on the road and police signaled them to stop for search. He added that during that time the mentioned people started firing on police. As a result Hawalder Farhad and Constable Mohammad Nawaz died on the spot.

DPO added that the accused escaped after committing the crime. DPO added that soon after the incident a police party reached the spot and cordoned off the area and conducted search operation in the area but no one arrested so far.

Rescue 1122 shifted the dead bodies to Tehsil Headquarter (THQ) hospital Takhathai for autopsy. Police registered case against unknown killers and started investigation.
