KARACHI: The rupee extended overnight gains against the dollar on the money market on Thursday in the process of trading activity, dealers said.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee rose by 20 paisas against the dollar for buying and selling Rs 111.50 and Rs 111.80 respectively, they said. The rupee gained sharply against the euro for buying and selling at Rs 135.50 and Rs 137.50 respectively, they added.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: The rupee did not move any side in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 110.54 and Rs 110.55 respectively, they said.

In the fourth Asian trade, the dollar was off recent lows against major rivals on Thursday, benefiting from the euro's weakness and higher US yields but capped by concerns about recent equity market volatility. Against a basket of six major rival currencies, the dollar was steady on the day at 90.267, probing its highest levels in two weeks.

The euro was slightly higher on the day at $1.2268, not far from its overnight low of $1.2246 and a far cry from last month's 3-year high of $1.2538.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 64.230, the US currency was at 3.921 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the greenback was available at 6.329 in relation to the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee appreciated versus the major foreign currencies including the greenback and British pound in the local currency market on Thursday.

According to currency dealers, the greenback resumed trading on a negative note following lack of buyers' interest in the market. As a result, it was ended lower at Rs 111.20 and Rs 111.70 for buying and selling, respectively, as compared to the overnight closing trend of Rs 111.50 and Rs 112.10 respectively, they added.

Similarly, the local currency also followed the same suit for another day against the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates further slid from Wednesday's closing of Rs 153.50 and Rs 155.00 to Rs 153.00 and Rs 154.50 respectively, they said.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee showed firmness against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Thursday.

The dollar opened at Rs 111.25 (buying) and Rs 111.35 (selling) against last rate of Rs 112.25 (buying) and Rs 112.35 (selling). It closed at Rs 111.25 (buying) and Rs 111.35 (selling).
