RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Terming a dark day for the academia of Sindh, the Karachi University Teachers Associations (KUTS) on Saturday announced to observe black day on Monday against the Sindh Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill 2018.

Secretary KUTS Dr Moiz Khan said Sindh government has cannibalized the ideology of the founder of Pakistan Peoples Party, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. It is such a shame that the bearers of the political legacy of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto have taken away the autonomy he has given to all universities of Sindh in 1972 through acts passed through provincial assembly.

By passing this act, he said, the Sindh government is trying to prove that government was more intelligent than the founder of PPP and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

“Both of the leaders always respected the autonomy of universities and never tried to indulge in the internal matter of higher education”, he added.

The teachers of University of Karachi along with their fellow teachers of universities from all across the province of Sindh categorically rejected the act.

“Nowhere in the world governments control or regulate universities. The common norm is to establish a university and let it function according to the universal principle of autonomy”, he said.

FAPUASA Sindh has taken notice of the matter and called an emergent meeting at NED University of Engineering and Technology on Monday (March 12), at 11:00 am, to discuss the strategy. The meeting will be followed by a press conference at 2:30 pm.
