KU reject Universities Amendment Bill 2018

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Teachers and students of Karachi University (KU) on Monday staged protest demonstration against the newly passed Sindh Universities amendment bill 2018.

In its meeting, Federation of All Pakistan Universities Staff Association (FAPUASA), Sindh chapter at NED University, the teachers’ body rejected the provincial government’s control over the admission policies and reiterated that it is a legitimate right of the academic councils of respective universities.

“Now where in the world and even in other provinces of Pakistan governments control the admission policies. It is a unanimous decision that Sindh should take the changes back and restore the right to frame admission policies to academic councils,” Prof Dr Naimat Ullah Laghari said, who is the president of FAPUASA Sindh.

In the new act, the government has introduced a clause according to which a non-professor “good administrator” can become a Vice Chancellor of any university of Sindh.

Laghari said such clause is against the basic structure and hierarchy of universities.

He said clause is not in accordance with the necessities of academia. VC as head of the university chairs all the meeting of statutory bodies including BASR.

FAPUASA also rejects the inclusion of any person from Sindh government other than the already existing in the selection boards.

The overwhelming presence of bureaucracy in the syndicate is highly objectionable. The FAPUASA Sindh resolved that the balance of university representation should not to be tilted towards the government for the smooth functioning of the higher education.

FAPUASA Sindh demanded that PVC should be appointed on the basis of recommendation of VCs and PVC also should be a person who is eligible for the post of professor

Sindh government issued a notification regarding the enhancement of PhD.

A Black Day will be observed in all public sector universities of Sindh on Tuesday, March 15.
