Disposal of petition seeking public hanging of convict sought

RECORDER REPORT

LAHORE: Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq of the Lahore High Court on Thursday referred a petition to Chief Justice for disposal of a petition by a larger bench seeking public hanging of convict Imran Ali in Zainab murder case.

The judge observed that a division bench should decide the matter since the convict had been sentenced under the Anti Terrorism Act, 1997.

Zainab’s father Amin Ansari contended in his petition that appeals of the convict stood dismissed by all legal forums including the Supreme Court. He said section 22 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 empowered the government to hang a convict publicly.

He asked the court to direct the government to hang the convict publicly. An anti-terrorism court on February 17, 2018 had awarded death sentence on four counts to Imran Ali.
