FAZAL SHER

ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Saturday started the process for arrest of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd) after receiving their arrest warrants from Accountability Court.

The Accountability Court hearing the Avenfield reference against the Sharif family on Friday last sentenced Sharif for 10 years in prison with a fine of GBP 8 million, Maryam Nawaz for seven years in prison with a fine of GBP 2 million. Capitan Muhammad Safdar (retd) got one year jail term.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam have been in London since June 14.

A senior official of the NAB said that the Bureau has received the copy of judgment announced by Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir. The NAB has started the process for arrest of Sharif, Maryam and Safdar to implement the anti-graft court’s judgment, he said.

Sources said the NAB has sent its team for the arrest of Safdar after receiving arrest warrants. The NAB started coordination with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government as per law for the arrest of Safdar.

The NAB spokesman also clarified that in the judgment of the Avenfield reference, which was announced by Accountability Court on July 6, 2018 against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam, Safdar, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, the offences of having assets beyond known sources of income, which prima facie come under the purview of National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), 1999, are corruption and corrupt practices.
