RECORDER REPORT

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the decision of appellate court allowing former federal minister Sheikh Waqas Akram to contest election to National Assembly from NA-115 constituency.

The petitioner Muhammad Imran, a voter from the constituency, pleaded that the returning officer had rejected the nomination papers of Waqas Akram for concealing his assets. However, an appellate tribunal accepted the appeal of Akram from Jhang district, set aside the decision of the RO and allowed him to contest the election.

The same bench had referred a petition challenging the nomination papers of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat’s chief Maulana Ahmad Ludhyanvi contesting elections to National Assembly from NA-115 and Punjab Assembly from PP-126 (Jhang) to the chief justice for its disposal by another appropriate bench. The petitioner Fida Hussain alleged that Ludhyanvi while filing nomination papers did not disclose the details of his assets and also the criminal cases registered against him. He said appellate tribunal had also allowed Ludhyanvi to contest the election.

The petitioner asked the court to set aside the impugned decisions.
