LAHORE: The old students of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) and the friends of Mayo Hospital have come forward to improve and strengthen the dilapidated infrastructure of Mayo Hospital and renovation of old wards on self-help basis.

Presently, different wards are being renovated at a cost of millions of rupees which have been collected / contributed by the old graduates of KEMU and the friends of Mayo Hospital. Four shelters for attendants of patients are also being constructed with the contribution of friends of Mayo Hospital.

Secretary Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Saqib Zafar inaugurated the fully renovated South Medical ward on Tuesday.

The old students of KEMC of 1985 have contributed 12 million rupees for this project whereas the renowned architect Nayyar Ali Dada, Associate Prof. of NCA Attiq Ahmed and other experts have provided their services free of cost for the infrastructural designing.

Speaking on the occasion, Saqib Zafar said that the senior doctors and old students of KEMU have set a precedent for the young doctors to pay back their alma mater by taking the responsibility of renovation and rehabilitation of old wards of the hospital.

The vice-chancellor KEMU Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal said on the occasion that the government is providing free medicines as well as disposables for surgeries to approximately 2500 patients in the Mayo Hospital.

The old students of KEMC are serving in USA, UK and other many countries and they are determined to pay back to their old educational institution and they are participating in the renovation/rehabilitation of Mayo Hospital enthusiastically, he added.

He disclosed that new campus of KEMU would be completed within two years in Muridke.

Registrar KEMU Prof. Irshad Hussain Qureshi, Prof. Asad Aslam Khan, President Friends of Mayo Hospital Fatima Afzal, renowned architect Nayyar Ali Dada, Prof. Shundana, Associate Prof. NCA Attiq Ahmed and other also addressed the inaugural ceremony.
