PESHAWAR: At least nine workers died and three others sustained injuries in an explosion at a coal mine in Kohat on Wednesday morning.

Around 12 workers were busy in work when the coal mine collapsed after gas produced by the coals caused an explosion at Akhurwal locality of Darra Adam Khel area.

Locals and rescue workers rushed to the site and recovered dead bodies of nine labourers as well as three others injured in the incident.

Deputy Commissioner Kohat Khalid Illyas while talking to the media said the incident occurred at 8 am. Workers who lost their lives and injured in this unfortunate happening belong to district Shangla of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he added.

Police said rescue operation has been completed. Moreover they told that at least three injured labourers are under treatment at district headquarter hospital in Kohat.

Deceased workers were identified as Umar Hassan, Umar Zada, Nazir Muhammad, Farman Ali, Khalil Khan, Wazir Khan, Hazrat Ali, Qadeem Gul and Farman Khan. While the injured were identified as Hasan Zada, Syed Rasool and Bakht Munir. Later the dead bodies of all the nine victims were dispatched to their native towns in Shangla district.
