ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), an alliance of five major religio-political parties has announced that it has finalised a plan to organise ‘Million March’ in Karachi on Thursday (November 8) against the Supreme Court’s recent decision that acquitted Aasia Bibi of blasphemy charges.

MMA Spokesman Shah Owais Noorani talking to Business Recorder here on Monday said that the plan has been finalised to hold a ‘Million March’ in Karachi on Thursday against the Supreme Court’s recent verdict. He said that MMA’s protest against the SC decision will be peaceful and attended by central leadership of the alliance including MMA President Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Emir Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan (JIP) Senator Siraj-ul-Haq.

Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman, was previously sentenced to death on blasphemy charges by lower courts but on October 30, the Supreme Court acquitted her saying no solid proofs of blasphemy were produced in the court against her.

Following the SC decision various religious parties took to the streets for three days, bringing the country to a standstill. Later Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had announced that a ‘million march’ would be held in the port city where “the future strategy” on the issue would be chalked out.

Noorani said that the MMA leadership has urged the workers to gather at Shahrah-e-Quaideen on November 8.

The JUI-F head had held the PTI government responsible for the turmoil in the wake of the SC’s verdict, and announced that his countrywide agitation would continue until the government is ousted.
