Foundation stone of academic block laid

KARACHI: Foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Academic Block of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Chair, University of Karachi, was held on Monday.

The KU SMBB chair organised the ceremony marked the birth anniversary of former prime minister of Pakistan.

Sindh minister for Works and Services Syed Nasir Hussain Shah was the chief guest while KU vice chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi presided over he event.

Members Advisory Board KU SMBB chair, MNA Dr Shahida Rehmani, Prof ND Khan, Prof Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui attended.

Nasir Shah said it was an important day for him as he had inaugurated a project which has been named after his leader Benazir Bhutto. He said the program was schedule earlier but postponed due to some reasons. He said he would use all available resources to complete remaining work at the earliest.

The provincial minister also said that Benazir Bhutto had always given preference to female and she was keen to bring changes in education sector as well.

“Benazir Bhutto had clear vision and she knew that educated women could play vital role in improvement and betterment of the society.”

According to him, the financial constrain would not hamper construction of KU SMBB chair and Convention Centre as the provincial government wants to complete the project without further delay.

“Funding is not a problem and I hope this Chair and Convention Centre will be completed under supervision of the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi shortly, he said.

Nasir Shah said that despite the fact that Higher Education Commission Pakistan has reduced ratio of grants, Sindh government, on especial directives of chairman Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has increased funding and grants of public sector universities of the province.

“Provincial government has been facing financial issues more than that other provinces face,” he said, adding that despite it, Sindh government gives special value to education; therefore, funds have been increased as compared to the past.

Nasir Shah assured that Sindh government would completely support construction work and other relevant matters related to the KU SMBB chair and Convention Centre.

He said that after completion, the project would be able to serve the purpose and would be helpful for those students and public interested in studying Benazir Bhutto’s life and her political struggle.

Meanwhile, the KU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, said that both the Chair and Convention Centre would have different functions and if the University did not face shortage of funds, then there would be no reason of delay in completion of the project.

“Benazir Bhutto became prime minister of the country on two different occasions and she deserved it due to her political wisdom and struggle also and it was not because she was daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto,” he said, adding that Benazir was the first woman on that highest position in democratic system of Pakistan and after that we saw female speakers in national and provincial legislatures.

He said that throughout her life, Benazir had faced very difficult time but she never compromised.
