KARACHI: The rupee moved both ways against the dollar on the money market on Monday in the process of trading activity, dealers said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: The rupee gained 20 paisas in terms of the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 156.40 and Rs 156.45 respectively, they said.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee shed 10 paisas in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 156.40 and Rs 156.90 respectively, they added.

The rupee did not show any change versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 171.50 and Rs 173.50 respectively, they added.

In the first Asian trade, the yen gained slightly and the yuan slipped on Monday as investors nervously awaited US-China talks this week for signs of whether the two sides can de-escalate or end their punishing trade war.

Risk appetite soured noticeably after Bloomberg reported that Chinese officials are signalling they are increasingly reluctant to agree to a broad deal pursued by US President Donald Trump.

Deputy-level meetings will be held on Monday and Tuesday, with top-level talks scheduled for Thursday and Friday, when Chinese Vice Premier Liu He meets US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in Washington.

The dollar was available against the Indian rupee at Rs 70.963 and the greenback was at 4.190 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee-greenback parity stayed unchanged amid sluggish trading activity in the local currency market on Monday.

According to currency dealers, the demand and supply situation of the greenback did not observe any change throughout the trading session as it firmly sustained its opening trend for buying and selling at Rs 156.50 and Rs 157.00 respectively.

On the other hand, the rupee showed divergent trend as it moved both ways in process of trading against the pound sterling which was bought and sold at Rs 192.00 and Rs 192.80 against the Saturday’s closing rate of Rs 191.75 and Rs 193.50 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar gained 30 paisa against the rupee at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Monday.

The dollar opened at Rs 157.30(buying) and Rs 157.40(selling) against last rate of Rs 157(buying) and Rs 157.10(selling).

It closed at Rs 157.30(buying) and Rs 157.40(selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold were Rs. 87,750 (selling) and Rs 87,000 (buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
