SC to take up petition against extension in tenure today

ISLAMABAD: A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, will take up a petition against the extension in the tenure of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa today (Tuesday).

Jurists Foundation through Riaz Hanif Rahi has filed a petition and made the federal government as respondent.

In August last, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved three-year extension in the tenure of General Bajwa.

“General Qamar Javed Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure,” a notification issued from the Prime Minister’s Office had said. On November 21, PM Khan appointed Lieutenant General Nadeem Raza as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with effect from November 27, 2019. The statement also confirmed that a notification for the “re-appointment” of General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the army chief had already been issued on August 19.
