ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that interfaith harmony and protection of rights of the minorities is top priority of the incumbent government.

The foreign minister was talking to National Minorities Commission Chairman Chela Ram Kewalani who called on him here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, and discussed issues of mutual interest, including interfaith harmony, the Foreign Office said.

It stated that the foreign minister congratulated Kewalani on his appointment as chairman National Minorities Commission.

Qureshi said that interfaith harmony and protection of the rights of minorities was one of the top priorities of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.

“Today, the world is praising Pakistan for its steps to protect rights of minorities,” the foreign minister said, adding that on the other hand, the Indian government was being criticized globally for its controversial measures taken against other minorities, including Muslims.

He also expressed the hope that the appointment of Kewalani as chairman National Minorities Commission would promote interfaith harmony in the country.

The newly-appointed chairman National Minorities Commission thanked the foreign minister for his congratulations and best wishes.
