RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: The gang-rape of a woman on a highway, which drew widespread condemnation on the social media, including from officials and politicians, was condemned by the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting on Friday.

The committee, which met here with Senator Faisal Javed Khan, said those incidents would not be halted unless the perpetrators of such heinous crimes were not given exemplary punishments. Senator Khan called upon the media especially the television channels to be careful, while reporting on the issue as the privacy of the victims must not be leaked out.

He said “sensitizing community leaders as well as the masses is a must to prevent such crimes in the country, as we all should join hands to eradicate this menace from the society.” He also said there was a need to further toughen the law in order to deal with criminals who were involved in such kind of heinous crimes, adding the government would leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators of the brutal act of crime to book.

The committee members said that people involved in such kind of crimes should be not spared or else no one would feel secure, while travelling in the country.
