ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani owns four vehicles and has assets worth 106.3 million rupees while Taj Muhammad Afridi is the richest senator having assets valued at Rs 1.27 billion.

According to the wealth details of the senators issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the fiscal year 2019-20, the total value of Senate chairman’s property is estimated at Rs 55 million. He owns four vehicles shown as his assets and his net assets are valued at Rs 106.3 million.

Senate Deputy Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla’s assets are worth Rs 67.7 million.

Leader of the House in Senate Dr Shahzad Waseem’s assets worth Rs 202.1 million while those of his wife worth Rs 172.3 million.

Federal Minister for Narcotics Control Azam Khan Swati has assets worth Rs 810.12 million.

Federal Law Minister Farogh Naseem owns assets worth Rs 399.6 million.

Federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz owns assets worth Rs 46.7 million.

Faisal Javed Khan from the ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has assets worth Rs 10 million.

Independent senator Taj Muhammad Afridi owns assets worth Rs 1.27 billion including Rs 167.1 million worth of assets abroad.

Leader of the Opposition in Senate Raja Zafar-ul-Haq has only Rs 50,000 in his bank accounts and does not have any asset registered in his name.

Pervaiz Rashid of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) too does not have any asset registered in his name but has Rs 3.3 million in bank accounts.

Chaudhry Tanveer of PML-N owns agriculture land of Rs 36.7 million, non-agricultural land of Rs 47.4 million besides also having Rs 37.9 million in bank accounts and furniture worth Rs 2.5 million.

PML-N’s Lt-Gen Abdul Qayyum’s (retd) assets worth Rs 86.4 million.

Mushahid Ullah Khan of PML-N has plots value Rs 7.5 million, shares of Rs 65,000 in stocks and jewellery worth Rs 0.8 million. He also has Rs 3.1 million in bank accounts.

Among PPP senators, Rehman Malik owns foreign assets worth 1.3 million pounds. His wife has 50 tola jewellery worth of Rs 2.7 million.

Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar owns immovable properties worth Rs 120 million and has shares of Rs 5 million in stocks, vehicles worth up to Rs 38.4 million and Rs 23.4 million in bank accounts.

Raza Rabbani has Rs 15.3 million investments in the business, Rs 6.2 million worth gifted property besides also owning millions in bank accounts. He also paid an income tax of Rs 1.5 million.

Talha Mahmood from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) has Rs 90 million in bank accounts, vehicles worth Rs 44.8 million and properties worth Rs 160 million. He also has other assets worth Rs 60 million.

Muzaffar Hussain Shah of PML-Functional has assets worth Rs 30 million.

Constitutionally, the lawmakers are bound to submit their yearly statements of assets and liabilities and those of their spouses and dependent children as on each year's June 30, a mandatory requirement under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.

This section reads, "Submission of statement of assets and liabilities.-(1) Every member of an Assembly and Senate shall submit to the Commission, on or before 31st December each year, a copy of his/her statement of assets and liabilities including assets and liabilities of his spouse and dependent children as on the preceding thirtieth day of June on Form B.

"(2) The Commission, on the first day of January each year through a press release, shall publish the names of members who failed to submit the requisite statement of assets and liabilities within the period specified under sub-section (1).

"(3) The Commission shall, on the sixteenth day of January, by an order suspend the membership of a member of the Assembly and Senate who fails to submit the statement of assets and liabilities by the 15th day of January and such Member shall cease to function till he files the statement of assets and liabilities.

"(4) Where a Member submits the statement of assets and liabilities under this section which is found to be false in material particulars, he may, within one hundred and twenty days from the date submission of the statement, be proceeded against for committing the offence of corrupt practice."

The ECP, every year, makes public the wealth details of the legislators, their spouses and dependent children of the previous fiscal year.
