KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has rejected the bail application of Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, while accepting bail pleas of his family members.

Justice Nadeem Akhtar and Justice Iqbal Kulhoro last week had reserved the judgment on the case.

The Sindh High Court on Wednesday heard a petition filed by the family members of Speaker Siraj Durrani seeking bails in assets beyond means case.

The speaker was accused of accumulating more than Rs1 billion which does not justify his means of income.

The court rejected the bail plea of Siraj Durrani but accepted bails of his other family members including Gulzar Ahmad.

The Sindh Assembly speaker’s wife, son and three daughters were also involved in the case. A reference against them is being heard in the accountability court.

The Sindh High Court had accepted the bail applications of Siraj Durrani and his family members, but the NAB challenged the court’s decision in the Supreme Court.

The apex court after hearing arguments had sent the case back to the SHC.

The chief justice of the Sindh High Court had formed a two-member bench to decide the matter. —INP
