It’s already too late to recant

This is apropos a Business Recorder op-ed “Power sector: accountability” carried by the newspaper last Saturday. The writer, Farhat Ali, has rightly highlighted the fact that the power sector is almost every successive government’s Achilles heel. This sector alone is responsible for most of the woes facing the country’s economy. How ironic it is that a net importer country is spending so much on foreign fuel that is used to generate power, then, to add insult to injury, domestic consumers, as opposed to industrial units, constitute its priority area insofar as the supply of power is concerned. In my view, successive governments are themselves responsible for doing nothing or little to fix the power sector. None of their policies was aimed at bringing about any meaningful improvement in this sector, but for political expediency. The present economic indicators clearly depict the grimness of our situation. Are there any attempts to successfully salvage the sinking economy? There appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Moreover, it is already too late to recant.
