Early diagnosis, effective legislation critical to combating disease: Nasir

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah attended the National Thalassemia Conference 2026 and emphasized that awareness, early diagnosis, and effective legislation are essential to combat a serious disease like thalassemia.
He stated that the Sindh government is taking all possible measures and extending full support to institutions working for the prevention and treatment of the disease. The conference was attended by renowned cricketers, as well as prominent political, social, and business figures.
Saqib Hussain Ansari and Dr Misbah warmly welcomed the provincial minister and presented him with a bouquet. Addressing the participants, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that thalassemia awareness programs are of great importance and that coordinated efforts are being made at all levels for its prevention. He added that both the federal and provincial governments are actively working together to tackle the disease and safeguard future generations.
He further said that the Sindh government has enacted legislation on thalassemia and is ensuring its effective implementation, while also providing full support to organizations engaged in patient care and treatment.
He highlighted that under the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho are giving special attention to improving the healthcare sector, particularly strengthening awareness and treatment mechanisms for thalassemia. At the conclusion of the event, the provincial minister distributed shields among individuals from various walks of life in recognition of their outstanding services related to thalassemia and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensify efforts for the prevention and eradication of the disease.
