RECORDER REPORT
KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee extended its marginal gains against the US dollar in the interbank market on Tuesday.
The local unit closed the day at 277.05, a gain of Re0.01 against the greenback.
On Monday, the Pakistani rupee settled at 277.06 against the dollar.
Internationally, the US dollar extended its blistering rally as it rode US Treasury yields higher.
In the broader market, the US dollar marched higher, drawing support from still-elevated US Treasury yields, which scaled multi-decade highs overnight.
Against the yen, the US dollar rose a touch to 157.92, while sterling slipped 0.02 percent to USD1.3222.
The dollar index firmed at 102.16, having scaled an 18-month high in the previous session.
The greenback’s strength has come despite reduced expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month in the wake of weaker-than-expected US jobs data, as investors bet the central bank would still need to tighten policy further.
Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, fell by more than USD2 on Tuesday as rising Middle Eastern crude exports and a G7 emergency stockpile release eased supply concerns, though lingering security risks in the region capped further losses.
Gulf oil flows excluding Iran surged to over 81 percent of pre-war levels in September, data showed. Saudi Arabia’s energy minister said oil pumped through the East-West Pipeline, which was hit by a drone attack last month, reached 5.8 million barrels.
