PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Monday constituted a special committee with Professor Dr Farida Aziz as convener to carry out awareness campaign against breast cancer in far-flung areas of the province.

This was announced by Special Assistant to KP Chief Minister for social welfare, special education and women development, Professor Dr Mehr Taj Roghani while addressing a symposium organised in connections with awareness campaign against breast cancer at Enver, Abbottabad on Monday.

The purpose of the constitution of the specialised panel is to carrying out mass awareness campaign against the deadly disease and initiating of practical war against it. The symposium was attended by doctors of Ayub Medical Complex (AMC) and Combined Military Hospital (CMA) and representatives of civil society.

The special assistant to the chief minister termed the growing breast cancer disease in women as a matter of higher concern, adding all sections of society to come forward for prevention and controlling of the disease.

She attributed the growing increase in the disease to the lack of awareness in the women regarding it.

She was of the view that the observing of breast cancer day was a good omen, but its objectives could not be achieved through the observing of the day only once a year and “we would have to stand against this disease as a nation.”

She said that lady health workers could play crucial role in that regard as they were serving from city to rural areas and all nook and corners of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Director, Enver Hospital, Nadeem Abbas said the day was observed throughout the world in the month of October to create awareness against breast cancer. He said about 13 million people diagnosed the disease each year in which seven million died.

He further said that cancer was a curable disease and required timely diagnosing, urging the women to consult doctors on their own or through mammography.

Dr Nadeem Abbas said some diseases could be controlled only through treatment, but could be eliminated completely. However, he said the prevention of the deadly diseases was only possible through treatment.

He asked media and other aware segments of the society for playing leading role in awareness campaign against breast cancer.
