ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has written a letter to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about the issue of resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers.

According to Article-224 (1) of the Constitution, “A general election to the National Assembly or a Provincial Assembly shall be held within a period of sixty days immediately following the day on which the day on which the term of the Assembly is due to expire, unless the Assembly has been sooner dissolved, and the results of the election shall be declared not later than fourteen days before that day.”

The Speaker of the National Assembly in his letter to ECP said: “In response to Election Commission of Pakistan’s letter No.F.8(21)/2014-Cord dated 16th September, 2014 and in continuation of this Secretariat’s letter No.F.21(1)/2014-Legis. dated 19th September, 2014 on the above cited subject, I am directed to further inform you that in spite of our consistent efforts, the members of the PTI whose resignations were received in this Secretariat have avoided to come forward to verify the genuineness and voluntary nature of their resignations in terms of rule 43 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007.
