RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday decided to approach the Supreme Court for implementation on the apex court’s verdict in the Asghar Khan case, in which the incumbent Prime Minister is accused of taking money from a premier spy agency to topple the then PPP government.

A meeting of PTI headed by party Chairman Imran Khan took stock of the prevailing political situation in the country, especially the Dawn Leaks report and Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to be formed to implement verdict in Panama Papers case. The recent visit of Indian steel tycoon Sajjan Jindal also came under discussion.

It was noted that the apex court delivered its verdict in the Asghar Khan case in 2012 but despite passage of so many years, the government is not ready to implement the court’s orders. The Supreme Court had ordered Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to hold a inquiry into distribution of Rs 140 million among the politicians during the elections of 1990.

The apex court had also ordered to proceed against the politicians found involved in this scandal.

But the federal government and FIA are acting as a silent spectators and the reason behind it, according to PTI, is to save the skin of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It was decided that the party will file a petition in the apex court to ensure implementation on its judgment in the Asghar Khan case and bring all those responsible to book.

The meeting noted if the Prime Minister did not quit till the JIT completes its investigation, the state institutions will not be able to undertake their job with honesty.

About the issue of the Dawn Leaks, it was decided that any attempt by the government to protect those involved in the controversy will not be allowed, adding all those involved in feeding sensitive information related to national security must not go scot-free.

The party also expressed concern over Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) decision to revoke the licenses of a private television channel, and said that any such move that is against the freedom of press is not acceptable.
