LAHORE: The Pakistan Chemical Manufacturers Association (PCMA) has organized a seminar on “profitability through industrial safety management” to apprise the chemical industrial units of safety measures.

The industries, using the highly hazardous chemicals in their production process, have a high risk of accidental release if they are not properly controlled by a well-designed safety management program. The speakers including PCMA Secretary General Iqbal Kidwai, a renowned chartered safety practitioner, Muhammad Dawood, and a number of the safety experts from pioneer chemical industries stated this while addressing the seminar.

Iqbal Kidwai said that industrial safety management is a back bone of the chemical industry. Any untoward incident may occur anytime in a chemical industry that uses highly hazardous chemicals bearing toxic, reactive, flammable or even explosive properties, he said. The PCMA has planned to hold a series of training workshops and seminars on safety management of the chemical units, he added.

Muhammad Dawood, speaking as the key expert, apprised the participants of the best practices being implemented by the developed world to ensure safety of the human and the material resources of the chemical industries.

He said the safety of a chemical industry should not simply be limited to its premises, but should also move along with movement of its products from production house to the market.

He gave useful suggestions and guidance for developing a useful safety management program based on actionable methods and process.

Based upon these suggestions, the participants were able to carry out a gap analysis of their existing systems and develop a sustainable safety management program.

Representatives from various chemical industries including Nimir Chemicals, Alpha Chemicals, Super Asia Agro, Berger Paints, Ghani gases Pvt Ltd, DIC Pakistan Ltd, Dynea Pakistan, Ittehad Chemicals Ltd and others attended the workshop.

A good number of professionals related to the fields of operation management, plant supervision, production process, safety and mechanical compliance audit also attended the seminar.
