SC commutes imprisonment of convicted Laghari to one year

KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Monday commuted the two-year imprisonment of convicted Bashir Ahmed Laghari to one year in fake degree case.

At Karachi Registry, a three-member bench of the SC headed by Justice Maqbool Baqir took up the appeal of convicted Bashir Laghari, who contested the election in 2008 on a fake degree. He was candidate from PS-56 in Badin.

His candidature was challenged and on the complaint of Election Commission of Pakistan, sessions court Badin held the trial of convicted, who was found guilty o contesting the election on a fake degree. Court sent him to two-year life imprisonment in 2013.

The Sindh High Court, (SHC) Hyderabad Circuit Bench upheld the conviction by overturning the appeal of convicted Laghari. Lagahri appealed in SC, which commuted his two-year imprisonment to one-year.

Meanwhile, SC bench issued notices to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a bail petition of contractor Shahid Shabir, who has been charged with causing the loss to national exchequer by misappropriating the public funds in development works in Gharhi Yaseen town of District Shikarpur.

The SHC had rejected the bail before arrest of accused, which appealed in SC against the decision of SHC.
