ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will deliver his policy address to 76th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through a video statement on September 24, outlining Pakistan’s perspective on key global and regional issues, focusing on the development in Afghanistan and the war crimes committed by Indian forces in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi left for New York on Monday to participate in the high-level segment of the 76th session of the UNGA to be held at the UN headquarters, New York from 21-27 September 2021.

According to Foreign Office spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Prime Minister Imran Khan will deliver the policy address during the session through a video statement on September 24, outlining Pakistan’s perspective on key global and regional issues.

Separately, he added that Foreign Minister Qureshi will be visiting New York from September 21-25, 2021.

During the visit, Qureshi will participate in various high-level meetings and side events, and deliver a talk at the Council on Foreign Relations, he added.

He said that the Foreign Minister will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and the UN leadership, besides interacting with a cross-section of the international media and meeting the dynamic Pakistani-American community.

“The Prime Minister’s policy address and the Foreign Minister’s visit to New York will serve to enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and engagement with its international partners and key institutions.

This reflects Pakistan’s abiding commitment to multilateralism and affirmation of the United Nations’ central role in the maintenance of international peace and security, promotion of sustainable development, and respect for human rights worldwide,” the spokesperson said.

He added that Pakistan has always played an active and constructive role in the United Nations framework and supported the organisation in the effective discharge of its mandates for addressing various regional and global issues as well as contemporary challenges.

Talking to Business Recorder, a diplomatic source said that in the engagements at the UN, Pakistan’s key focus would be Afghanistan and the grave human rights situations in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir, besides the issue of climate change.

He said that the Prime Minister would present Pakistan’s perspective of the current situation in Afghanistan and would call upon the international community to recognise the new reality in Afghanistan and engage with it for peace and stability.—ALI HUSSAIN
