LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority has approved Rs 500,000 assistance to the families of Frontier Constabulary soldiers Sepoy Murad Ali and Sepoy Gul Pir who died in a terror attack last month.

The incident took place in an attempt tried to protect the authority’s installation at the Gomal Zam Dam Project.

The authority has praised their courage and devotion to the duty and in recognition of their sacrifices it has decided to provide one-time financial assistance to the families. The Gomal Zam Dam Project is located in the South Waziristan Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA).

The project area is considered to be a difficult one in view of the law and order situation in the region. The authority completed the Gomal Zam Dam and Power House in 2013, which is of immense importance for the economic progress and social uplift of the locals through poverty alleviation. The objectives of the project are to develop irrigated agriculture, mitigate flood and generate low-cost hydel electricity. The gross storage capacity of the dam is 1.14 million acre feet sufficient to irrigate more than 190,000 acres of land. The generation capacity of the Power House is 17.4 megawatts, with an annual electricity generation of 91 million units of low-cost electricity.
